William Hogarth was an English painter, printmaker, pictorial satirist, social critic and editorial cartoonist. He opens the way to the Royal Academy of Art (1768) and to realistic and sequential art for all. The Age of Enlightenment was dominated by books and writings of all kinds. Distrust of visual art was rampant but Hogarth managed to invent a form of art writing using ink and paper and narrative series of images as if he was a journalist or a comic strip writer!
Most of the time, Hogart's paintings were related to contemporary fiction, romances and plays. They depicted English society during the reigns of George I and II, we call them "modern moral subjects".

Can you imagine what made British people use French phrases at the time? Compare with the situation of the 2 languages nowadays.

3. Who are the characters?
from left to right: the fiancé/ his future bride/ the future bride's confidant/ a father/ the notary or solicitor/ the architect/another father

4. How is each character feeling?
The characters are smartly dressed so we know it is a special occasion. The father who is sitting on the right looks smug and proud of his social class (high class). He is dressed in the most sumptuous manner (he must be of noble birth, an aristocrat). On the contrary, the notary is wearing dark-coloured clothes.
The two young fellows are pouting, which means that they do not have their say about what's going on/ they are helpless. The young earl is weary and absent-minded whereas the girl is overwhelmed and has a glum look. The young man is dressed in the latest Paris fashion. The black spot on his neck is the mark of syphilis.
The father who is sitting on the left of the table is concentrated.He seems to be less wealthy than the one opposite. He is an alderman. He is a member of the council in the City of London, so he is probably a wealthy merchant or a lawyer. He is examining the marriage contract. The one opposite is looking down at him and looks arrogant.He is pointing at himself from one hand and showing his family tree from the other hand. The family tree aims at proving his noble inheritance.
The two young people are bored. The young lad is playing with his snuff box and the lady is twisting her handkerchief nervously.
the man dressed in black and talking to the young lady has a smile on his lips. The man is a lawyer and his name is Silvertongue. he may be the young woman's lover.

5. What are the relationships between the characters?
The two young people are not looking at each other; They are back-to-back, which means that they are not in love and that they do not want to be married.
The two fathers are facing each other: they have a common goal and they tend to consider marriage as business: legal documents, gold coins, bank notes are spread all over the table.They are striking a deal.
The main characters of the "story" are sitting and painted in bright colours: red, blue, white and gold.The second main characters are depicted in dark colours: black or grey and are part of the setting.

6. What is the general atmosphere of the scene?
satirical, polemical:bourgeois and aristocratic society/the marriage as a business contract (see the notary is holding notes and a contract/on the table, we can see the contract and gold coins= marriage is money)
humorous: the fathers look serious/ the children look away or are indifferent
the two little dogs are emulating the young couple: the dog on the left look as indifferent as the lad/the dog on the right look downhearted like the girl. Both are chained up.
The father on the right has his right foot in a bandage (he is suffering from gout-too much fat food )and is sitting alone on a large armchair. He is the Earl of Squander. Squander means that you waste money, throw it away. we know that at that time, the aristocrats like having expensive leisure activities lie fox hunting, playing the piano, horseriding, etc.
The paintings on the walls are dissolved in the wall carpeting and are ridiculously large and pompous.('official art was of bad quality' says Hogarth)
Draw a line linking the heads and starting from the girl's head and going to the aristocrat's: M.

Répondre aux consignes fait partie du programme de l'école maternelle!

les parasites à la compréhension des consignes sont:

lecture mécanique sans génération de sens
inconscience de la valeur signifiante des mots (on saute les petits mots surtout)
appréhension de la répétition de l'échec
pas de mise en lien des mots de la consigne avec le savoir

ce qui n'aide pas vraiment:

la lecture expressive des consignes à haute voix car l'élève reste mentalement passif (déchiffrer n'est pas comprendre)
le soulignage des mots importants car l'élève ne sait pas identifier les mots importants et ceci incite à ne pas prendre en compte les petits mots
la relecture car l'élève est toujours dans l'incertitude
l'explication du vocabulaire car l'élève doit faire émerger les mécanismes de sens
la reformulation avec ses propres mots car la consigne étant déjà précise et explicite, l'élève sera perturber davantage
l'explicitation de la consigne car cela n'aide pas l'élève à être autonome
l'information des liens entre consigne et savoir car l'élève doit trouver seul les mots de la consigne qui sont "chargés" d'évoquer le savoir

opter plutôt pour:

1. après avoir donné la consigne pour la réalisation de la tâche, questionner les élèves pour s'assurer de la compréhension du guidage didactique
2. susciter des questions de la part des élèves sur le savoir
3. susciter des questions de la part des élèves sur le guidage: "j'ai rien compris!" "pose moi une question"
4. donner un joker par élève: un élève=une seule question pas plus

s'assurer que les conditions (combien de temps? quels moyens?), la performance (on me demande d'être capable de...) et les critères de réussite (barème) sont mentionnés dans la consigne.
à quel moment l'élève pourra dire "j'ai fini"? donner une grille avec les critères de réussite: j'ai réussi si...
qu'est-ce qui a été facile ou difficile à réaliser dans la tâche demandée? (traitement du comment faire?)
pourquoi telle tâche a t-elle été demandée à tel moment de l'apprentissage?
que faire pour mieux réussir? (remédiation dans le fond -savoir ou dans la forme-procédure) ou pour faire encore mieux ?(approfondissement)

on peut aussi faire élaborer des consignes aux élèves ou leur faire réaliser le test pour une classe de même niveau!

Ken Loach is a well-known left-wing director from Britain. He tells stories rooted in the struggle of the working class.Loach's oeuvre deals with the struggles of individuals and of society.These stories are a slice of life. They don't have happy endings, sometimes no endings at all. They don't deliver moral lessons. They simply document;The director says that his films follow in the literary tradition of such social storytellers as Dickens and Zola.Both these writers used their talents to document the lives of the poor and their struggle, to expose the way in which social constructs kept them in that place and also to raise questions at the least, and at the very best to change public opinion.

Loach uses unknown actors, particularly those who are from the area portrayed, who have actually worked in the industries depicted to make the story more realistic. To these characters, he added real people in the minor roles.

Loach likes his characters to have real reactions. he achieves this by shooting in chronological sequence, allowing the character to evolve according to what happens to him or her. Sometimes he will even shoot backstory so that the character can assimilate it.
